Description
Measuring heat loss. Mercury thermometer clamped in position with its bulb in warm liquid (blue) contained in cup made from expanded polystyrene. The expanded polystyrene, a foam form of this plastic, is a good insulator. The degree to which it retains the heat of the liquid can be quantified by measuring the rate at which the temperature decreases.
